Have you ever worried that charting on an electronic device during a patient encounter would have a negative impact on your patient’s experience at your office?
The results of a recent survey by Software Advice, a company who researches EHR/PM technology, show that this worry is unsupported! The survey asked patients whether it would be bothersome if their doctor used a desktop computer, laptop computer or a tablet to type during their office exam. An overwhelming majority of patients responded that it would not be bothersome at all.

One of the biggest arguments from doctors who are reluctant to switch to an EHR is that they risk losing eye contact with the patient during their encounter. Unfortunately, the alternative of having to record the same exact notes twice, once on paper, once in the EHR after the visit, is awful for productivity and should be avoided at all costs. The question is, is there a way to chart with your patients in the room and still maintain eye contact and give them the attention they deserve?
The survey suggests that patients are the most open to their doctors utilizing tablets to chart during their visit. By using a web-based EHR on a mobile tablet such as an iPad, doctors can chart right at a patient’s bedside, or in the exam room, without having to worry about a screen coming in between them and their patient.
NextGen Office's ipad ehr was originally designed and optimized for fingertip touch, and is completely iPad native.
